Óir na Farraige is Simply Blue Group’s pioneering seaweed aquaculture venture. Launched in 2022, this project explores seaweed farming as a sustainable source of marine protein.
Seaweed farming offers numerous environmental benefits, from enhancing biodiversity and absorbing carbon to producing oxygen and removing nutrient run-off. Beyond its environmental impact, Óir na Farraige has the potential to boost local economies, particularly in remote and rural communities, by creating jobs, fostering innovation, and improving food security.
Seaweed has deep roots in the history and culture of Galway Bay, this initiative aims to secure a sustainable future for the region’s waters.
Project Goals
This project aims to promote environmental sustainability by leveraging seaweed farming to enhance marine biodiversity, absorb carbon, and actively contribute to climate change mitigation through sustainable aquaculture practices.
The project also focuses on advancing innovation in marine protein production. By establishing Óir na Farraige as a leader in sustainable seaweed cultivation, we are working to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly food alternatives and build a more sustainable future.
